Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

We all go through phases of our lives and depending on which part we are in, there is a certain level of care and needs that should be met for one to live a healthier and happier life.  As a nursing student, I learned about the Maslow hierarchy of needs.

Maslow’s hierarch of needs talks about five (5) things, 1st priority is Physiological Needs, 2nd Safety, 3rd Love and Belonging, 4th Self Esteem and 5th Self-Actualization.

Pysiological needs include –Breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis and excretion.

Safety needs are security of body, of employment, of resources, of morality, of the family, of healthy and of property

Love and Belonging are friendship, family and sexual intimacy

Esteem are self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, respect by others

And Self-actualization is morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice and acceptance of facts. Babies needs a lot of help to meet physiological needs, grown ups like us have to decide and do things for them to make sure they are fed and fed enough and on time. Same goes when people are older, when memory begin to decline and have to be reminded. And proper diet is not followed. This is when a care home can come in, where there are health care providers who will assure proper nutrition and meet all needs.
