College is a time where you learn about many things that you may have never even heard of before. It’s a place to question and a place to develop your ideas of who you are and what you want to do with your life. However, it’s also a time of insecurity and, sometimes, loneliness. Due to the many stresses that can overcome a student during their time in college, there is a significant risk of good Christian students losing their faith. This isn’t due to any particular lack of faith, any particular lack of love for the Lord, or due to any other personality flaws. It’s simply a matter of human nature that you should question your beliefs deeply while being so constantly bombarded by conflicting beliefs.
Despite the many temptations that come with college life, there are a lot of different ways for you to keep your faith while you’re in college that you may have never thought of. These are very simple things that anyone can do and you don’t need to have any special personality traits for these tricks to work. All you need is a love of your Savior and the will to keep pressing onward.
Avoidance
Everyone has triggers that cause them to have impure thoughts or question their faith. For some people, alcohol has an impact on their inhibitions and can lead down a dark path. These triggers are different for everyone and it’s important for you to first identify what these triggers are for you so they can be avoided. The truth is that you can never be led down a path of lost faith if you never allow yourself to be in those types of situations. This doesn’t mean that you need to avoid going to parties or having fun with friend. After all, that’s all part of the college experience. However, it does mean that you should think long and hard about the types of people you are hanging out with before you go to these parties.
Reinforcement
The truth is that even avoiding these situations won’t totally protect you from issues while in college. To help keep yourself in the right frame of mind, it’s important for you to find like-minded people on your college campus that share your values. This can be an interfaith prayer group or perhaps a group that is more specific to your denomination. This type of community reinforcement can be one of the best ways to keep your faith in college. It’s easy to find colleges that have a Christian focus if you look at online resource sites like www.online-christian-colleges.org.
Stay Strong
In the end, you should always allow God to be your guide and follow that guidance. As long as you put your trust in the Lord, nothing bad can come of your time in college.
